1,650 file suits against govt, TEPCO over nuclear crisis

FUKUSHIMA (Jiji Press)–Residents near Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant sued the government and TEPCO in a spate of lawsuits Monday, claiming they were exposed to radiation and forced to evacuate by the country’s worst-ever nuclear crisis.

The suits, which demand the government and TEPCO pay compensation and restore radiation exposure to pre-disaster levels, came as the nation marked the second anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami that triggered the nuclear crisis.

The suits were filed with the Fukushima District Court and the court’s branch in Iwaki, as well was the Chiba District Court. Another similar lawsuit was expected to be filed with the Tokyo District Court later in the day.

In the four suits, about 1,650 plaintiffs are seeking damages that are estimated to reach at least 5.36 billion yen.

A total of 800 residents from Fukushima, Miyagi, Yamagata, Tochigi and Ibaraki prefectures at the time of the incident joined in the suit filed with the Fukushima District Court.

Of that number, about 10 percent were ordered by the government to evacuate following the outbreak of the nuclear crisis.

The plaintiffs are demanding the government and TEPCO reduce rad1iation to pre-disaster levels and pay 50,000 yen per person a month until such conditions are restored.

I have heard that the Carrier itself, which is now in drydock, may be also contaminated and if so, it would be a multiple billion dollar loss. I also heard that the dock workers working on it, are now getting sick! I’d like KPBS to check both those stories out!
If it turns out that Officers got pills to prevent radiation sickness and the enlisted did not, then the US Navy will look very bad indeed, since this was a nuclear powered vessel; they had both the trained personnel and the technology to know exactly what they were getting from Fukushima via on-board equipment and secure satellite feeds!
