Six Telling Figures from Japan’s Leaking Fukushima Nuclear Plant

New revelations that the damaged Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in Japan is leaking more radioactive groundwater than previously thought have prompted Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to say Wednesday that the government will step in and “take firm measures” to help solve the problem.

On Thursday’s PBS NewsHour, we’ll explore the scope of the problem with Arjun Makhijani, an electrical and nuclear engineer who is president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research in Maryland.

In the meantime, he gave us some numbers to consider about the plant:

300 tons

The new amount of radioactive groundwater the Japanese government estimates has been leaking into the Pacific Ocean each day since soon after the nuclear plant’s meltdown, following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

700,000 liters

Daily volume of cooling water, plus the water entering into building basements due to rain and from groundwater, that must be managed at the site.

100 degrees Celsius (or 212 degrees Fahrenheit)

Temperature at which Tokyo Electric Power Co. cools the three damaged reactors, using a water injection system, to keep them stabilized.

33,000 becquerels/liter (Bq/L)

The amount of Cesium-134 and Cesium-137 in the contaminated groundwater reported at the site in July. (U.S. drinking water maximum contaminant level: about 4 Bq/L; Japan’s emergency limit is 60 Bq/L for Cesium-134 and 90 Bq/L for Cesium-137)

136 miles

Distance between the Fukushima nuclear power plant and Japan’s capital Tokyo. PBS NewsHour science correspondent Miles O’Brien reported in March 2012 about grocery stores in Tokyo posting cesium levels next to produce grown in Fukushima to try to calm customers’ concerns.

$300-$400 million

Estimated cost of building a new containment system that the Japanese government is considering — a frozen underground wall to block water from escaping, reported the Associated Press.

end quote. The world press is over 2 years late with this information. Ray Masalas of Canada, a wood worker and VW Beetle repairer, has been on the ball with the technical proofs – provided by the TEPCO photo archive ignored by the world mass media – since March 2011.

Nelson Surjon, of Tokyo, has been on the ball with the known facts as observed by people in Japan.

Majia and Bobby have been reporting the facts for the same period.

There is something deeply rotten in the relationship between the mainline media and nuclear industry. Something which cannot be totally explained by the secrecy provision of the US Atomic Energy Act and related legislation which makes it illegal to report on events regarding “special nuclear material” such as reactor fuel including MOx.

No other industry on earth enjoys legal permission and complusion not to report full facts to its share holders and the people of the world.

Meanwhile, in 2012 a paid agent of the US DOE, an Adelaide radiologist deliberately disrupted a meeting regarding the Fukushima nuclear disaster held at Uni SA. The man failed to declare his fuinding source, and attempted to censor the meeting discussion to terms he and US DOE wanted. He later went on to publically declare his deliberate breaching of Australian OH&S regime, as mandated by the Austrtalian nuclear regulator ARPANSA, in his work place, a private Adelaide radiology centre.

If there is no consenting patient, if there is no fully informed consent, if there is no medical need, if there is no expectation of medical benefit, it is not medicine , it is illegal human experimentation (ACHRE, 1994, Presidential panel).

Fukushima imparts no benefit, it is a disaster. It is not medicine, it is not “like a CT Scan”
Nuclear pollution is not medicine. Nuclear pollution is not a benefit to the planet, as the destruction of Fukushima agriculture and aquaculture attest.

People who claim benefit are full of bullshit, people who claim truth seekers in this matter are radiophobes and who claim the affected children should not be evacuated fully, are in breach of their medical oaths and of the Nuremberg Principles. An investigation of the same attitudes and actions of earlier decades conducted by the US government ending in 1995 found these breaches to have occurred.

In relation to the handling of the information regarding the truths of Fukushima, the same has occurred again.

The vulnerability of multi megawatt reactors to cooling system failure has been known since the 1960s. Tellers response was one of fear to the extent that he advocated building such reactors underground. Lapp of the AEC pin pointing the problems of “nuclear plumbing” and meltdown. In 1985 another official call went out for a technical fix. Qualified observers called for the abandonment of mass ranks of reactors in the one location, due to the danger to staff and the public, and the difficulties involved in controlling, at close quarters each reactor where radiation from adjacent units produced a concentrated killing field. A killing fieled TEPCO workers have had to face daily since March 2011. The advantage of such a layout is to isolate local opposition and to enable the construction more reactors with fewer communities protesting. Cheap cheap social engineering is not a technical fix.

The lies told since March 2011 have been awesome and par for the nuclear course, yet the Japanese government in 2011 established at the the cost of millions of Yen a sub contracted unit to monitor and “correct” Fukushima related comment on the internet. They are pretty slack. They have not correct my spelling once.

Cold Shutdown: the process of pouring tons of water daily for a period of years into leaky overheating reactors because no reactor on earth has an effective “off” switch. Fact. In this regard, my toaster is light years ahead in control technology than anything the genius nuclear industry has thus far dreamed of.

Paul Langley.
